Meet the Senior Team

Ian Thurley

Graduating from Leeds Polytechnic Business School with a 1st Class honours degree in Accounting & Finance in 1989 and the Marston Radiators prize for the best dissertation relevant to industry, Ian has been a CIMA-qualified Management Accountant since 1993.

Having had a taste of management accounting at Elida Gibb’s toothpaste & shampoo factory in Seacroft as part of his ‘sandwich’ degree course, on graduating Ian embarked on an industry-based career, joining British Steel’s Scunthorpe works as a Cost Accountant. He has since worked in a variety of manufacturing, retail and service businesses, including Bridon Ropes, Caradon Stelrad, Black & Decker, Safestyle UK and Business Link Yorkshire, before being appointed as Finance Director at Siddall & Hilton Products in 2012. Ian was part of the first MBO in 2015 when the company was acquired from the Siddall family and then led the second buy-out in 2019.

Away from work, Ian is a serious petrol-head with a particular interest in ‘proper cars’, being the long-time owner of a 1985 Capri and a 1972 Cortina and with an ambition to add other 1960’s & 70’s Fords to his garage. Ian’s obsession with cars is something he shared with his Grand-father, manifesting in early childhood as he built an extensive collection of Dinky and Corgi toys – a collection which now extends to a fleet of over 1,400 1/43-scale models, displayed in his home office. He has had to become very skilled with a soft brush and a duster!

Ian also enjoys the detective work associated with family history, having traced his Thurley roots back to a brick-maker in Sandy, Bedfordshire, in 1522. He has also identified a common ancestry on his maternal line with Leeds aviation pioneer, Robert Blackburn, founder of the Blackburn Aircraft Company and the UK’s first commercial passenger flights from Leeds to London.
