In 2013, the coastal town of Lowestoft in Sussex suffered devastating floods when a tidal surge hit. Over 160 homes and businesses were damaged as well as significant impacts to the town’s road and rail infrastructure.
As a result, the Lowestoft Flood Danger Risk Management Project was established. Its aim is to provide actionable solutions to lessen the risk of flooding from the sea, rivers and extreme rainfall for the 1,500 homes and 800 businesses in the area.
A crucial piece of work for the Project was to develop a tidal flood wall, dividing the port from the harbour and centre of the town. This will provide a high degree of protection for the inhabitants of the town should the potential for flooding occur in the future.
We were approached by Barkers Fencing, a Systems Manufacturer with over forty years of expertise in designing, manufacturing and delivering high-security fencing. They needed a panel that could provide the strength and resilience needed to withstand extreme weather conditions. A 656-mesh system was selected as it is built to withstand all manner of external elements with no impact on its core performance as well as being low maintenance. To further enhance the aesthetics of the new system, it has been powder painted in blue to blend in with the local surroundings.
The residents and business owners of Lowestoft, now have a safe, secure and exceptionally strong mesh fence system as part of their new flood wall. To accommodate the fluidity of the wall, which although mostly flat and ideal for a mesh fence still had some curved spaces that the fence had to follow, we worked closely with Barkers to produce a range of different 656 mesh panel sizes to offer maximum flexibility during installation.
This high-quality fencing system is contributing daily to the safety of the town’s people and will continue to perform as needed with minimal maintenance for the lifespan of the product.
