SME Climate Hub Committed 2026

UNDERCONSTRUCTION...

It took us 130 years to get here. Since 1895, our business has weaved its way through constant change. We operate in a sector where sustainability progress often takes time. But that's not an excuse to delay action.

The Baseline

"Our heritage rests in operational excellence, we have always known how to reduce waste, now we need to reduce our emissions."

Steel plays a crucial role in infrastructure, safety, and the systems that keep society functioning. However well we manage our operations, manufacturing remains resource-intensive. It consumes energy, generates emissions, and contributes to wider material flows that the planet is struggling to absorb.

We're starting by getting the basics right: improving data quality, working closely with suppliers, investing in efficiency, and setting targets we can track. With this first report, we're using the VSME reporting standard. We're not sharing this to tick a box, or to present a perfect picture. It's voluntary, so it's designed to help us make better decisions, hold ourselves to account, and give our customers and partners a clearer view.

Better Planet: Emissions & Energy

We made a public commitment with SME Climate Hub to halve our emissions before 2030, and cut them to zero before 2050. The UK government targets are to reduce all emissions by at least 81% by 2035. Here is how we are tackling our footprint.

Scope 1 Direct Operations

In October 2025, we transitioned from natural gas to biomethane, supported by Renewable Gas Guarantees of Origin (RGGO). In 2024, we moved a portion of our owned vehicles to electric, and we are exploring BioLPG for our leased FLT fleet.

Scope 2 Purchased Energy

In March 2025, we moved to sourcing renewable electricity, matching 100% of our operational consumption. We source from a supplier that guarantees the renewable source with energy attribute certificates.

Scope 3 Value Chain

Steel purchases represent the most material upstream emission source. Our emissions were calculated using a mass-based method and a proxy factor of 2.23 tCO2e per tonne of wire rod.

We are developing a comprehensive Scope 3 decarbonisation pathway, moving away from proxy data to supplier-specific Environmental Product Declarations (EPDs).

Mapping the Value Chain

Upstream

Raw steel proxy data transitioning to EPDs.

Travel

EV infrastructure & transport tracking.

Lifecycle

Cradle-to-gate LCA & EPDs for fencing.

Circular Economy & Waste

Steel waste generated from our operations is 100% recycled, supporting circular material use. We know this is just the beginning.

  • New 'Binfrastructure': Continuous bin liners save 70-80% of the plastic used with standard bin liners.
  • Compost-IT Partnership: Connecting business food waste to local growers and anaerobic digestion facilities.

Outlook for 2026-2028

As our data quality improves, our focus is shifting to embedding sustainability into everyday decision-making across the business.

  • ISO Integration Integrating ISO 9001 with ISO 14001 Environmental Management.
  • Cyber Resilience Working towards Cyber Essentials certification in 2026.
  • Product EPDs Completing a cradle-to-gate LCA and EPD for our high security fencing.

Continuous Improvement

Moving from establishing foundations to embedding operational outcomes.
